The exposure is rarely the check nobody did. It’s the check that failed, got noted, got worked around, and never surfaced again — because it was recorded inside a form that came back marked complete.

When an inspector asks what you knew and when, a stack of signed sheets is not the same as an answer.

Checks are defined once per asset type and apply to every machine of that type. The operator sees the list for the machine in front of them. The section engineer sees every machine at once.

No signal, no problem, no paper.

Underground has no reception, and the pit often has very little. Inspections run offline on the device and sync when the operator comes back into range so the record is made at the machine rather than reconstructed at the end of shift from memory and a notebook.

Every finding carries a photograph, a timestamp and the name of whoever recorded it. A failed check stays failed until that specific check passes again; running a different inspection on the same machine doesn’t clear it.

Working, legal, and critical are three different questions.

 

A machine can be in good physical condition and eleven weeks past a statutory check. It can be fully certified and losing a brake circuit. It can be sound on both counts and still be the one machine you cannot afford to lose this shift.

Take a mobile machine with fire suppression that’s overdue on its test. Condition: Functional. Compliance: Overdue. Risk profile: Critical. Average those and it reads amber which is roughly the state in which machines go underground.

Held apart, the same machine tells you the equipment is sound, the certificate isn’t, and the consequence is a fire on a diesel machine in a confined space. That’s not an amber. That’s a decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work underground with no signal?

Yes. Inspections are completed on the device and sync when it’s back in range. Offline mode is available from the Essential plan upward.

Can operators complete pre-start checks quickly enough at shift change?

The check list is defined per asset type, so an operator opens the machine and sees only what applies to it — nothing to search through or skip past.

What happens when a check fails underground?

It’s recorded against that specific check on that machine, with a photograph, and it stays failed until that check passes again. It doesn’t clear because a later inspection of something else came back clean.
