A machine goes out on hire in date. Six weeks later it comes back, gets checked over, and passes — because physically there’s nothing wrong with it. Meanwhile its thorough examination lapsed on somebody else’s site eleven days ago, and it’s booked out again on Thursday.

Nothing in that sequence looks like a failure. The return inspection was clean, the paperwork was filed, and the asset is genuinely in good condition. The only thing that went wrong is that the clock kept running while the machine was out of sight.

That’s the gap: a condition check on return tells you what the customer did to it. It doesn’t tell you what time did to its certification.

Working, legal, and critical are three different questions.

 

A machine can be in good physical condition and eleven weeks past a statutory check. It can be fully certified and losing a brake circuit. It can be sound on both counts and still be the one machine you cannot afford to lose this shift.

Take a mobile machine with fire suppression that’s overdue on its test. Condition: Functional. Compliance: Overdue. Risk profile: Critical. Average those and it reads amber which is roughly the state in which machines go underground.

Held apart, the same machine tells you the equipment is sound, the certificate isn’t, and the consequence is a fire on a diesel machine in a confined space. That’s not an amber. That’s a decision.

Does this replace our hire management system?

No, and it isn’t trying to. Contracts, availability, rates and invoicing stay where they are. Nova handles the inspection and condition side — what went out, what came back, and whether everything is inside its certification window.

Can we run the same checks at check-out and return?

Yes. The same template applies to both, so the two records are directly comparable and the difference between them is visible on the asset.

Do we pay per depot or per user?

Neither. Pricing is by plan, with unlimited users on every paid tier. Locations are included up to your plan’s limit — 150 on Essential, which covers most hire networks.

 
Can yard staff use it without a signal?

Offline capture is available from the Essential plan, so checks can be completed in the yard or on a customer site and sync when the device is back in range.
